MiniMage Again - Short Tablet Takes

Hopefully this will be the blog that has short, frequent entries about doing the TabletPC thing.

If you like any of this, I welcome you to check out my general tech blog at http://miniaturemage.blogspot.com/

We Shall not Lack for Ultra-Mobile PC Information and Assistance

I'm excited about the Ultra-Mobile PC, and it looks like others are, too. A whole slew of sites have sprung up to arm us with everything we need to embrace Ultra-Mobile PC ecstasy. Here are the ones I've learned about, so far: GottaBeMobile.com is not so new, but has been vocal, and I expect them to continue to be.
A former Sony Vaio U-70 owner, James "jk" Kendrick should remain an excellent source of guidance.
TabletPC Buzz has a new forum dedicated to the form factor.
Juicy tidbits about the UMPCs have been posted by moderators at Tablet PC Talk Forums.
| expect one day we'll have a Microsoft newsgroup and some Microsoft UMPC MVPs (maybe jk would consider a lateral move!). Then again, since the UMPC runs Tablet PC Edition, I wonder if those of us seeking help will use the same resources. We'll just have to see.

Not that I consider myself a resource by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd like to note that I've already started saving for mine. I'd love to take it on my cruise in May, as I'd been thinking the Tablet will be a bit too large, heavy and obvious for shore excursions. I'm thinking ASUStek. I like owning different brands of computers, and I've never had an ASUS PC. The last PC I built has an ASUS board in it, and it was my main desktop until I bought a used Dell last year; now it's my Mandriva Linux "server."

Feel free to comment, if I missed a useful site (or for any other reason)!

There are quite a few new sites, aren't there? It's been great fun to watch. We have a list here: http://www.whatisnew.com/blogs/dailynews/archive/2006/03/12/7241.aspx

Like you said, UMPCs use Windows XP Tablet PC Edition so people can use those Microsoft newsgroups for discussion:
microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc and microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc.developer

I would happen to agree; a very exciting time.  Most of the stories I have seen on the UMPC have not been so "flattering", claiming that the machines are under powered and what-not.  Honestly, I believe that they are missing the point.  The UMPC is not meant to be the end-all machine.  They are meant to be a unifying machine.  I would consider this type of device more like a hub that allows me to be "in the know", no matter where I go, no matter what I am doing.  It doesn't allow me to do everything - but that is not it's function.  It allows me to be "in the know" so that I can do everything with the resources I have available.  If I need to follow up with X, I can go to my desktop to accomplish that, or to my cell phone, or any other item that falls from that "hub".
I too am becoming partial to the Asustek model.  I am not sure that I like the way the buttons appear on the Asus device, but I like the overall look.  I also like the fact that it has GPS built in (at least I think I remember reading that -please correct me if I am wrong).  I am ready to pick one up as soon as they are available (Asustek - Give me a call!).

Lora:  Yeesh! I missed a bunch of them! Thanks!  Also, I didn't mention Warner Crocker, who has been a font of knowledge.  http://wickedstageact2.typepad.com/
Illuminator:  You mean I'm still supposed to use more than one Wintel computer?   Aww!  I don't wanna!  I have desktops at home and work, but I rarely touch them.
