Well, I've been patiently waiting to see some more reviews of the Motion LS800 and see what users have to say as they get their hands on it. This tablet has really grabbed my attention because I want something small, but definitely not as small as a PDA. I want something that is clearly a "companion" machine, highly portable, and with the understanding that I won't be using it for heavy-duty creative work. They started shipping in the last week, and initial
comments I've seen have been good. No one who's used one seems be be complaining about the limited SVGA screen real estate, and the overheating issues seems to be related to blocking the vents on the back (and it has a lot of vents).
Short of some very negative revelation, or the Mojave finally appearing (it's been "coming soon" for going on four months) and being a much, much better machine, I'll likely order an LS800 this week. So, I've been looking at places to order. With the Motion products, it appears that the best approach is to go with one of the resellers. I'll be looking for an educational discount, which Motion doesn't offer directly, but many of the resellers do (varying between 2 and 6 percent, from what I've seen so far). Also, Motion's price to max out the RAM to 512MB is pretty high ($139). The usual place I get memory for my Macs (since Apple similarly profits heavily on build-to-order memory), Data Memory Systems, has the memory for $65.
The other thing I've found is that build and deliver take around two weeks, so I'm right at the edge of the window to have any time to get acquainted with the machine before school starts.
I'll be posting much more regularly once I have the machine; the real focus here is intended to be my experiences with the tablet as both a student and a Mac user. I already have some neat ideas for "companionizing" it with the Macs in our setup... should be lots of fun!
