  • Technology Product of the Year

The forum polls are open for nominations of 2007 technology product of the year. Feel free to nominate your favorite UMPC, Tablet PC, or MID. Make sure that the Apple iPhone does not take the forums by storm by nominating your favorite product.

  • Your First (Next) Tablet PC

The Tablet PC platform improves with each generation: faster processors, better software, improved resolutions, and better handwriting recognition (under Vista). With the increase in variety, which Tablet PC do you expect to purchase? Will you purchase a convertible or a slate? Will you invest in a screen capable of indoor or outdoor clarity? Will you look for a Tablet PC light in weight? Will you look for one based on price? Will you go for the unit with the largest hard drive and the most RAM?

The choices are great. What will it be?

  • Where did all of the hard drive space go?

    OneNote Local Settings

I wasn’t sure that Lora believed me when I said the Tablet PC hard drive was full. Actually, I was a little stunned last night and have been searching for the cause ever since receiving the notice. After a few hours of deleting Microsoft Money and other unused programs, there was still less than a few GB left.

A right-click on “My Documents” shows 18.4 GB of the hard drive is being used. Clearly this is not the cause of a 60 GB drive being full. After sniffing and crying to anyone who would listen, the time came to look at some of the other folders on the drive. Something had to be the cause for the hard drive being full.

After a laborious search, Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote shows 29.4 GB being occupied. The Backup folder is 16.9 GB and 12.0 folder is 12.4 GB in size. Ah ha !  The hogs have been found!

Image supplied for all those who doubt the hard drive challenge … Now what? Any suggestions?

  • Filling Up the Hard Drive on a Tablet PC

The 60 GB hard drive on my Tablet PC is full. This is the first time I have ever filled up a Tablet PC hard drive. Sure, other machines are stuffed, but never full. Once more, the contents are the Microsoft programs and my dissertation. Nothing else sits on the 60 GB drive. When I saw the notice last night that the drive was filled, I started to search around to delete items. There are some backup copies of the dissertation in a folder and so these will be off-loaded but otherwise I’m stuck with having outgrown the drive.

Any suggestions on what to do now? Should I move to an external drive for the dissertation? What solutions have you come up with for solving a filled hard drive?

  • Improving Handwriting Recognition in Vista

Bradley of the Tablet PC Team provides a few details on how to improve handwriting recognition in Vista.

For personalization of handwriting recognition, it's true that 50 sentences can seem like a lot to ask - but it turns out that that set represents just the right amount of training data to ensure that users across the board will be able to get a noticeable benefit for their investment. The threshold was set based on test datasets from many users.

  • Year 2 Residency is Over

I am back (sort of). Posting has been extremely light the past few weeks (months) because the problem statement for the dissertation needed heavy work and a 30 minute presentation was required during the second year residency. By Friday, and after very little sleep and plenty of worry, the problem statement for the dissertation prospectus was written in a form to present to a crowd of peers and potential mentors.

Despite an intense weekend, the presentation went well. Just a few short hours ago, a round of applause erupted as all of the doctoral students realized they had just completed 2/3 of the coursework and only have two more years to go! Now the real work begins, the dissertation.

My thoughts are pretty blurred as I reflect on the past weekend. The first chapter of the dissertation is outlined, ready for some heavy writing and editing (followed by a full year of more writing and editing). The next step is finding a mentor to help complete the dissertation. I'll start looking tomorrow for someone to help with the statistics. Actually, the plans for this week are to complete the statistics labs, improving my skills.

In between labs, I'll look around the community server website and see what is happening. An update for the software should be available in the next month. Some websites have already been updated with the 2.1 version. Hopefully the upgrade will be smooth.

I hope all is well in your world.

  • Would You Pay $10,000 for a Domain Name?

On March 8, 2006, an individual or business registered the domain name www.umpcblogs.com.  I apologize for not registering it and linking to this site, that was the plan but I became distracted during the week. Anyway, they are offreing the UMPC Blogs domain name for sale. The asking price is $10,000 US dollars. The price suggests people are expecting UMPC devices to be extremely successful.

    Would you pay this money?
  • The Lone Hair

Somewhere about 19 years of age, my hair went on a long vacation. Most likely, on the complete opposite end of the earth. Sometimes, though, a single hair pops up out of no where - for a return visit. Maybe the strand is simply lost.
