I wasn’t sure that Lora believed me when I said the Tablet PC hard drive was full. Actually, I was a little stunned last night and have been searching for the cause ever since receiving the notice. After a few hours of deleting Microsoft Money and other unused programs, there was still less than a few GB left.

A right-click on “My Documents” shows 18.4 GB of the hard drive is being used. Clearly this is not the cause of a 60 GB drive being full. After sniffing and crying to anyone who would listen, the time came to look at some of the other folders on the drive. Something had to be the cause for the hard drive being full.

After a laborious search, Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\OneNote shows 29.4 GB being occupied. The Backup folder is 16.9 GB and 12.0 folder is 12.4 GB in size. Ah ha ! The hogs have been found!

Image supplied for all those who doubt the hard drive challenge … Now what? Any suggestions?

Filling Up the Hard Drive on a Tablet PC

Layne P. This is the first time I have ever filled up a Tablet PC hard drive. Sure, other machines are stuffed, but never full. Once more, the contents are the Microsoft programs and my dissertation. Nothing else sits on the 60 GB drive. When I saw the notice last night that the drive was filled, I started to search around to delete items. There are some backup copies of the dissertation in a folder and so these will be off-loaded but otherwise I’m stuck with having outgrown the drive.

Any suggestions on what to do now? Should I move to an external drive for the dissertation? What solutions have you come up with for solving a filled hard drive?

Improving Handwriting Recognition in Vista

Layne P.

For personalization of handwriting recognition, it's true that 50 sentences can seem like a lot to ask - but it turns out that that set represents just the right amount of training data to ensure that users across the board will be able to get a noticeable benefit for their investment. The threshold was set based on test datasets from many users.

Year 2 Residency is Over

Layne P. Posting has been extremely light the past few weeks (months) because the problem statement for the dissertation needed heavy work and a 30 minute presentation was required during the second year residency. By Friday, and after very little sleep and plenty of worry, the problem statement for
the dissertation prospectus was written in a form to present to a crowd of peers and potential mentors.

Despite an intense weekend, the presentation went well. Just a few short hours ago, a round of
applause erupted as all of the doctoral students realized they
had just completed 2/3 of the coursework and only have two more years to go! Now the real work begins, the dissertation.

My thoughts are pretty blurred as I reflect on the past weekend. The first chapter of the
dissertation is outlined, ready for some heavy writing and editing (followed by a full year of more writing and editing).
The next step is finding a mentor to help complete the dissertation. I'll start looking tomorrow for someone to help with the statistics. Actually, the plans for this week are to complete the statistics labs, improving my skills.

In between labs, I'll look around the community server website and see what is happening. An update for the software should be available in the next month. Some websites have already been updated with the 2.1 version. Hopefully the upgrade will be smooth.

I hope all is well in your world.

Motion LE1600 Tablet PC Vidcast

Layne P.
