TD on Tablet PC

Tales, trials and tribulations of integrating the Tablet PC into a multi-business environment from someone who does not work for Microsoft.

Where to store your digital pen when not using?

Picture of cross pen needing a storage place when not in use

I'm thinking about breaking out the drill on a small piece of wood for some place to store the digital pen on the desk when it's not in use. Anybody else have a more elegant/professional solution(s)?

The M1400 has its own slot for neatly storing the pen in the unit, but I've been using the Wacom cross pen more and more because it has an eraser end. I got that pen from the Tablet PC meetup at CES 2005.

Hi David,
Caught you appeal for comments.... sorry, in my defence I am struggling to keep up to date.. so many new blogs to read now.

On the pen issue, I gave it some thought, and came up with an idea.
What about a specially made clip that fits into the PCMCIA slot of the tablet and has a sprung loaded pen holder ?

Hi Tabby - thank you for the feedback.

I'm not sure something on the PCMCIA slot would work since I use in portrait mode and with the M1400 layout I like the buttons on the bottom of the holder and slot is covered by the desktop stand. Something that is like a normal pen holder would probably work, maybe. You seen anything like that anywhere? Maybe an office supply store. It has to be thick enough for the digital cross pen which is fatter than a normal ink pen.

Oh, and you can just call me "TD" or TDavid if you like. "David" is missing a letter ;)

On my Averatec, my pen is stored in an open slot to the left of my screen when in laptop mode. It makes it convenient to just grab and use it as needed as well as popping it right back into place. I haven't hit the problem you have as my system uses a proprietary pen so I can't use any of the third party options :(.

The one thought I had would be to make something like the connector I have on the USB drive I received at a recent Microsoft event. It's a large necklace-like loop similar to what they use on ID badges at conventions that has a snap-in connector on the bottom. So I just hang it around my neck and one click and it's in my hands and ready to plug into a system.

Your desk looks fine :)

At work we have these stylus cups that stick to the side of touch screen/tablet PC screens for easy access rather than using the Pen silo.

Some look like this:

It has some adhesive(single-sided sticky tape) that will allow you to place it anywhere. Some coworkers have spare Stylus pens stored on the side of the Motion folding stand for quick access.

A few have these PencilPulls

<img src="http://store1.yimg.com/I/styluscentralcom_1849_6501706"> (http://www.styluscentral.com/pencilpull.html )that they can clip to their tablet cart, belt, docking station/stand...

Me I just place my pen on the top row of my keyboard both at home and at work.

I guess these retro pen holders like this

would work too...

bleeman - interesting idea on the badge holder. I have mine from CES and some other shows.

Thanks fyiguy - looks like the links you tried to provide in the comments got fubared. Something like the last photo pen holder would be perfect if it's big enough to hold the Wacom cross pen:

If I'm not holding my Cross pen, it's usually in my pocket or to the right of the Tablet PC. I also use this really fancy cup (polystyrene) that holds pens that aren't in use. In my tote bag, there is a pen slot that the pen pops into.
